Will China ever witness an Arab Spring ?
So many people predict that some changes in China, maybe some Arab spring will happen –I doubt that it will happen because China’s social media is really special. They copy Twitter and Facebook but they block the real Twitter accounts and Facebook accounts. All the Chinese governmental services put the servers in the capital of Beijing, that means the central government controls the data.
That’s really like putting the server of Facebook and Twitter in the White House, so can you do any Occupy Wall Street thing or protest against the role of the president? No. So basically Chinese media is just like that, putting a server in the central government, and [making it] impossible for you to organize any level of protest against this regime.
Tell us more about Chinese social media platforms, especially how men and women interact on them.
You should always keep in mind that Chinese social media is the first mature market media system inside China, you in the US already have the traditional media as a mature media society for about decades right, at least half the century?
But Chinese social media is the first level of the media society, so everyone already went through that during those years. We just started to witness the relationship of men and women, a little bit, being materialized by social media. People use social media applications of cell phones till date and the Chinese are very innovative in this field. For example, usually you can easily find the girls around you. And every girl has a picture, so you can judge which one you want to date and you can send a message to let them to friend you. If your profile is written to show that you are rich enough I think you will definitely get the chance, but as you already will find out, this kind of social media-driven dating relationship where good looking women and men with money is the priority of the relationship….basically it’s not a good thing, but it’s not a very new thing. You already witnessed and experienced this in 1996, and basically we just experienced your old story.
Tell us your thoughts on attending your first Women’s Forum.
It’s good because I can see when the man is not dominating the party. The whole confidence of how women treat each other, there is no tension. Women don’t need to dress sexy if there are no men or few men, so I think that’s a real chance for me to understand what’s really what [women] are thinking, you know more pure women’s thought. That’s a very good chance for me, I should learn from this chance to be nicer to the women around me.
